Sirens lyrics by Pearl Jam

Sirens lyrics by Pearl Jam

Sirens is a track from Pearl Jam's Lightning Bolt record.

The song is a ballad but without a big hook in the chorus. Sirens is played by Mike McCready with a capo placed on the third fret of his guitar.

Lyrics:

Hear the sirens
Hear the sirens

Hear the sirens
Hear the circus so profound

I hear the sirens
More & more in this here town

Let me catch my breath & breathe
And reach across the bed

Just to know we're safe
I am a grateful man

The slightest bit of light
And I can see you clear

Have you take your hand, and feel your breath
For fear this someday will be over

I pull you close, so much to lose
Knowing that nothing lasts forever

I didn't care, before you were here
I danced in laughter with the everafter

But all things change
Let this remain

Hear the sirens
Covering distance in the night

The sound echoing closer
Will they come for me next time?

For every choice mistake I've made
It's not my plan

To send you in the arms of
Another man

And if you choose to stay I'll wait
I'll understand

It's a fragile thing
This life we lead

If I think too much I can get over
Whelmed by the grace

By which we live our lives
With death over our shoulders

Want you to know
That should I go I always loved you
Held you high above, true

I study your face
And the fear goes away

It's a fragile thing
This life we lead

If I think too much I can get over
Whelmed by the grace

By which we live our lives
With death over our shoulder

Want you to know
That should I go I always loved you
Held you high above, true

I study your face
And the fear goes away
The fear goes away
The fear goes away

Aah ah, oh oh
Aah ah, oh oh

  14. Ones ability to decipher the written word as it is manipulated throughout a particular song or poem gives much insight into ones thoughts or the thoughts into that of the author. Eddie Vedder captures us by allowing the audience to feel his emotions through his music which ultimately gives much creedence to its substance. What makes this track so intriguing is that it could mean one or all of the things that we think it's about...

  18. Art is interpreted by the individual but only the artist who created the piece truly knows what the piece is about. Everything I've read so far is speculative. The lyric is BEND not BED. The song is not about a child.
The song is not even about Ed, from my perspective.
It's about a guy who hasn't yet told the gal he loves that he truly loves her. That she's the love of his life. He's saying if I should die, if the next siren is for me, I always have loved you. If I made mistakes in the past and those errors pushed you in to the arms of another man, I understand. None of that changes how I feel about you. I love you. I'm sorry I was afraid to tell you before but I wish to tell you now.

It's no different than if I look at a Dali painting and see an inferno yet you see a parade of butterflies. You see what you wish to see.
That's the TRUE BEAUTY of art.

  19. "The slightest bit alive and I can see you clear"

  20. "hear the circus so profound" - that's the only line I think we are missing, I just do't think that one is right. wish someone could figure that one out, I can't! Other than that, I think the headphones guy nailed it. And I do think it's "the slightest bit alive." anyways it is just beautiful - a true love song- i know some fans are complaining that it's too mainstream but if you are going to write a song this emotional, why not let it have widespread appeal? can't wait for the show in a couple months!

  21. OMFG¡¡¡ This song is an inmediate classic¡¡¡

    ReplyDelete
  22. i think it's:

"hard to take your hand, and feel your breath, oh i fear that someday [this] will be over..."

we all know eddie likes to omit sone words from his actual performance of the lyrics (like "this") and run wirds together (like "oh i fear that"). plus, he sings "the fear goes away" later. so this makes sense to me. especially if it was written about his feelings for his daughters. seeing them in the arms of another man is them growing up, dating, and getting married (to men--or if they are gay, to woMEN :) )

    ReplyDelete
  23. A picture is worth a thousand words.
I don't understand why it's so important for the audience to know what the song is actually about?
    Did you enjoy it?
    Did it move you?
Can you learn to appreciate the people in your life more from having listened to it?
Are you still taking your loved ones for granted?

Why does this song have to be about a child????
Why can't it be about lost love?
    Or about lovers making amends?

Don't try to fit it in to a box.
This song is way deeper than any box on a shelf.

If I think too much, **I can get overwhelmed**

  36. I think the album reflects the differing writing styles of band members. A bit uneven in terms of flow through but every song is either instantly likable or a grower which you come to love. These guys are getting older and I feel the album reflects that with enough pacey tracks to rock gigs. Sirens is a stunning song. Goose bumps every time I here it. I think the album from 1to 12 delivers. Not skipped a track. That says it all.

  41. Great song, beautiful even, but not Black - so take it easy ... I'm 40 now and I felt what he felt with Black 20 years ago, and now Sirens with a wife and 3 kids later. He is real - that's why we love Eddie. Very addictive, catchy hook. I wish he did more with the ending. Light on creativity in the studio. Organ can go away. We need more guitar for PJ's songs to sink into the soul and be timeless ... it's always the guitar

  45. SIRENS-
Here's my version of how these lyrics came to be.
Ed's good friend got married w/o telling the real love of his life. (!)
When she caught wind of the news, and realized it was true, she said, "If he ever ends up single again, I want to talk to his mother."
    That comment started a dialogue.
The gal who was not married to Ed's friend was asked, "Why is that?"
She answered, "if my plane goes down someday or I get in a really bad car accident and am kaput...he should know I really did care about him, love him, want him to find a peace within his heart."
That's what initially spurred the song.
The sirens in LA sounding probably just gave Ed the notion to take it from there.
That's the story behind Sirens, folks.
    I would know.

  48. I heard this song today on Triple M for the first time, and I was wiping the tears away, for so many reasons it touch my heart ! Life is short and you never know what it will throw at you ! Just live for today and hope for tomorrow!

  49. Life is short and i'm daily trying to tell you what I exactly feel for you, I' couldn't stand the idea that the sirens are coming for me and die, or letting you go without letting you know how much I love you, how much I admire you, and specially let you know how you have changed my life, you've made me a braver man able to confront my very own fears, and realize that I've been afraid only of fear itself.
I wish I could see the day when we're holding hands watching the horizon and see what tomorrow could bring to us.
I think this song is about waking up with your loved one and being gratefull of life or god or whatever for seeing you the first I see in every morning and it makes me really jealous, I know I should let you go, but now I know I can't, I really want to thank for every dawn with you.
I really feel like a bad person for wanting to take you "from the arms of another man" but I don't really want to think that "you'll be a star in somebody else's sky"

    2. Spinning yarn.
      Storytelling through song is tricky.
It leaves out all the different characters that have played a role. Atleast in this song, it has. And just focused on 3ppl.
What about the moms of the 2 main ppl? Or siblings? Or maybe even other lovers/wife of the main character? Or children of one or all 3 ppl?
Don't all those people have feelings or perspectives?
How will their life be effected if 2 ppl who are not together, come together?
      What of acceptance?
And then there is "the fear".
Fear from feeling so vulnerable in a union or the thought thereof.
At some point in this story even there is a surrendering that the two can be together and try to make amends with those that are hurt by their coupledom or these two need to surrender to the idea that they will never be together.

Even though both are well aware how the other feels- is that enough for them to say we don't care if others are hurt?

  50. Ok ok.
Personally, I can't take it anymore.
These two people at the "HEART" of Sirens- you two need to stop fooling yourselves that you can live happily without one another because its apparent you can't!
Just try to be nice to each other, nice to the people you love who are going to be hurt and quit thinking/mulling things over.
"I don't want to think, I want to feel" ring a bell?
If you truly love each other the way you profess, just come together- kiss & make up.
In the long run, people will forgive you two and every one involved will be better for it.

    Sheesh.

  54. I think any good song can be interpreted differently by people in different life stages. In these comments above, I've read about people encountering cancer, losing loved ones, meeting loved ones, having families, etc. Myself, well, I have been separated from my wife for over two years. When I heard Sirens for the first time, it hit me right in the heart. Don't tell anybody, but I cried for the first time in a long time. "To see/send you in the arms of another man" and "Want you to know that should I go I always loved you" spoke straight to me. Have been listening to Pearl Jam since college in the early 90s. Awesome new album. Love it.

  55. I think the Sirens are a dual metaphor. We all get that the sirens are an audible warning of danger and the lyrics do imply that the person has some concern that they'll come for him next time. This could mean that the authorities and/or emergency services may have to bust down the door, which this person locks before building their floors, just as before. However, I think Eddie may have implied Sirens to refer to the ladies of Greek mythology and early Christian belief that lured sailors (and maybe their sons?) to ruin. This person loves his woman and wants her to know he realizes he holds her above him, but he's torn by the distant call of Lightning Bolt lady. I think this dude just needs some rubber insoles and ear muffs.

Or maybe you should send Lightning Bolt woman to this website to read your conflicted emotions regarding the lyrics to LB & SIRENS and she can help make your decision easier by offering to pay for the ear muffs?!

  56. The first time I heard this, I thought they were referring to The Odyssey and the Sirens who call us , by temptation, to our death of the rocks. But if the woman he's singing to is his "mast" he is screwed. She is just as tempted by the Sirens as he. The only mast is the Soul: God.

  57. my daughter was 18 years young, when four cop cars parked in front of my house, beating on my front door. they were here to inform me of her car accident... she didnt survive. her system was clean. she was wonderful. the church could barely hold the hundreds that came to her funeral. not too long after, a young man, she had 'saved' -- by never judging, by her Godly faith-- had committed suicide due to his loss. i do my best to be strong, to be here for all these young kids confused by the tragedy.... this song , naturally, floods my memories of these dark days, and i pray, our town hears no more sirens , for our young generation, especially.
